Health. Weakened immune system, transmitted diseases, development of co-occurring disorders; such as schizophrenia and depression, almost all types of major cancer known to modern science are examples of the different conditions that result from substance addiction. Not to mention, direct and deadly effects of sedation and intoxication, such as; road accidents, accidental fires and overdosing.
Social concerns. Since addicts are often preoccupied with how to get their substances of choice, get high and deal with the after effects, obligations to friends and family members are often forgotten. This leads into arguments and fights. And it is because of this that a high percentage of marriage end up in ruins. There is also the proliferation of co-dependency where people close to addicts are traumatized by the addiction, which also have debilitating effects on their personalities and lives.
Occupational concerns . Responsibilities at work are also neglected because of the constant use of drugs or alcohol. Going to work with an altered perception of reality only results to inefficiency and unproductivity. Arguments with co-workers and bosses are often the scenario for this, which can end up in dismissal.
Legal. Alcohol is the only drug that is not either prohibited or controlled; possession of most drugs alone causes serious legal troubles. Sentences of penalization depend upon the amount of substance within possession. Driving under the influence and public misdemeanor are some of the drug related charges which have heavy consequences.
Substance addiction can kill you, that simple message has been stressed out by a lot of groups through the years. Death can mean a lot of different things, but if there is one thing that is true, is that the demise in all of the facets of your life can also mean a life that is not worth living. A life so bleak and desolate, a life that results from substance dependency.
